Legal and technical glossary

Chain of custody

A record of evidence source, handlers, dates, purposes, transfers, copies and changes. It does not by itself confer forensic accreditation.

Encryption

Protection depends on keys and scope. Transport and storage encryption differ from end-to-end encryption; the latter must not be claimed without architectural verification.

Redaction and anonymisation

Redaction hides information in a sharing copy while keeping the original separate. Removing a name alone does not guarantee anonymity; context may allow re-identification.

Jurisdiction

Applicable law and competent authorities depend on the facts and countries involved. Norwegian registration does not automatically make one law govern every victim’s case.

Takedown and copyright

Harm reports differ from copyright infringement notices. DMCA is a copyright-related route, not a general basis for removing all harmful content.

Digital forensics

Documented examination of digital evidence using appropriate methods. Separate facts, inferences and confidence; account similarities alone do not prove a person’s identity.
